Notes from the Journal of John Mercer, Esquire

Source: “Notes from the Journal of John Mercer, Esquire, (1704/5-1768) of Marlborough, Stafford County, Virginia,” Virginia Genealogist 4[1960]:160.

[1767] January 12 – James Garrard came.  [Mercer had quite an establishment at Marlborough and it required several white men to oversee his plantation, brewry [sic], etc.  Shortly after the first of the year was the time when the new men came.  James Garrard (1747-1822) came to Marlborough as a young man.  He served in the Revolutionary War, subsequently moved to Kentucky, and in 1796 was elected its second governor.  He married 20 December 1769 in Overwharton Parish, Stafford County, Elizabeth Mountjoy.
