You are correct, I have the Chipman Genealogy book also and Joseph’s (b. 1790) parents were Joseph Chipman (b. 1758) and Elizabeth Hall.  Joseph Chipman (b. 1758) parents were John Chipman (b. 1728) and Anna Mattocks.

I do not know if there is a connection between Samuel Adams Chipman b. 16 Mar 1817 in MA who married Martha Bigelow who was a daughter of Levi and Lucinda Rice.  It seems that there could be a tie since I can find NO information about either Anna Mattocks or Thira (Clara) Rice (Rhyce).  What do I do now?

And yes, I think that the original spelling was Thirah which later became Clara.

Thank you, Lynette!
