AXTELL. – From a pocket memorandum Book and Almanac published in 1691, which is well preserved and now in the hands of Joshua E. CRANE, Esq., of Bridgewater, was taken the following record of the death of Henry AXTELL as recorded by his son, Daniel AXTELL.
“My Father Henry AXTELL was ‘Slayne’ by the Indians the 19th day of April, in the year 1676,” between Marlboro’ and Sudbury.”

AXTELL, as surname, is probably a variant of AXCILL, EXCELL, EXALL, originating to designate a resident of Exhall Parish, Warwickshire. Ralph AXCILL is in Kirby’s Quest, Somersetshire, A.D. 1327. Joseph COLLYER and Elizabeth AXTELL are in the Marriage Allegations at Canterbury in 1683, and John AXSTELL and Mary DREW in 1686. Richard EXALL and Elizabeth BUSHBEY married, at St. James, Clerkenwell, London, in 1701. John AXSTYL signs a deed 1535 from the monks of the Augustinian order in Gatesden, Hertfordshire, and at St. Peter’s Church, Berkhampstead, Hertfordshire, is a record of the baptism of John, son of John AXTELL, in 1539, and William, son of John, in 1541. There are two William AXTELLs having children baptized in this church, 1614 to 1628, as appears from a Thomas, baptized October 31, 1624, and Samuel, baptized December 15, 1624, the rule of the Church of England requiring baptism a few days after birth.
The baptisms of sons of William AXTELL recorded are: 1. John, baptized August 14, 1614. 2. William, baptized December 1, 1616. 3. Thomas, of whom further. 4. Daniel, born May 26, 1622; may be the regicide colonel.

I. Thomas AXTELL, apparently son of William AXTELL, was baptized January 26, 1619, and died in Sudbury, Massachusetts, March 8, 1646. His widow, Mary, married, September 19, 1656, John GOODENOW. He probably had sisters: Mary, married, June 16, 1646, John MAYNARD; and Hannah, married, June 18, 1659, Edward WRIGHT. Children: 1. Mary, baptized, in Berkhampstead, Hertfordshire, Septem-

II. Henry AXTELL, son of Thomas and Mary AXTELL, was born in England, probably in Berkhampstead, in 1641, and was killed by Indians in Marlborough, Massachusetts, March 21, 1675-76. He obtained land in Marlborough in 1660; removed thither, and married there June 14, 1665, Hannah MERRIAM, daughter of George MERRIAM, of Concord, and lived in the eastern part of Marlborough. His widow married, July 16, 1677, William TAYLOR. Children: 1. Samuel, born March 27, 1666, probably died young. 2. Hannah, born November 18, 1667. 3. Mary, born August 8, 1670; married, May 24, 1698, Zachariah NEWTON. 4. Thomas, of whom further. 5. Daniel, born November 4, 1673, died in January, 1735; married, May 12, 1702, Thankful PRATT, daughter of Elder William PRATT, who led a colony from Dorchester, Massachusetts, and lived in South Carolina until 1707, when he settled in Berkley, Massachusetts. 6. III. Thomas AXTELL, son of Henry and Hannah (MERRIAM) AXTELL, was born in Marlborough, Massachusetts, April 16, 1672, and died at Grafton, Massachusetts, December 18, 1750. He settled, about 1735, in the tract Hassanamisco, named Grafton, in 1739, having married, November 2, 1697, Sarah BARKER, of Concord, Massachusetts. Children, born in Marlborough, Massachusetts: 1. Thomas, born August 19, died December 22, 1698. 2. Sarah, born February 16, 1702-03; married, February 7, 1721, Josiah HAYDEN. 3. Joseph, born August 1, 1750; married, February 4, 1730, Abigail HAYDEN, of Sudbury, Massachuetts, and settled in Grafton, in 1746. 4. Hannah; married, July 20, 1738, Zedekiah DRURY, of Sutton. 5. IV. Thomas AXTELL, Jr., son of Thomas and Sarah (BARKER) AXTELL, was born in Marlborough, Massachusetts, May 11, 1712, and died in Grafton, Massachusetts, May 28, 1798. He married (first), May 13, 1736, Elizabeth SHERMAN. (SHERMAN IV.) He married (second), October 6, 1760, Mary SANGER, but her children died young. The Merriam Family and Connections

I have lately been investigating the Merriam Family of Concord, and may have found some things worthy of publication. The wills of Robert and Mary Merriam are remarkable for the number of relatives named in them, and from them we learn some family connections not noticed in Savage or Shattuck.
Robert Merriam, of Concord, died 15 February, 1682, aged 72. He left a will written 10 Dec., 1681, in which he mentions his wife Mary, his sole executrix, his cousin (nephew) Isaac Day in Old England, son to his sister Joan Day deceased, Robert Merriam, of Cambridge, son to his cousin (nephew) Joseph Merriam, deceased, his cousin (nephew) Jonathan Hubbard, the children of his two deceased brothers, Joseph and George Merriam, viz.: William, John, and Samuel Merriam, Elizabeth Hinchksmans, Susan Scotchford, Elizabeth West, Hannah Taylor, and Abigail Bateman, and his cousin John Buss.
Mary Merriam, widow of Robert, died 22 July, 1693, aged 72. She left a will written 15 February, 1688, in which she mentions her cousin (nephew) Jonathan Hubbard, her cousin (niece) Mrs. Elizabeth Corwin, eldest daughter of her brother Jacob Sheaf, her cousin (niece) Mrs. Mehitable Sheaf, youngest daughter of the same brother, her sister’s four children living in the Southern parts, viz.: John, Nathaniel, Mary, and Joanna Chittenden, her cousin John Ruck, her cousin Samuel Ruck, her cousin (nephew) William Merriam, her cousin (niece) Elizabeth West, her cousin (nephew) Isaac Day, her cousin (nephew) John Merriam, her cousin (nephew) Samuel Merriam, her cousin (nephew) Scotchford, and her cousin (nephew) Robert Merriam; her executors were Jonathan Hubbard, John Merriam and Samuel Merriam.
I. Robert and Mary Merriam had no children; she was evidently daughter of Edmond Sheaf, and baptized at Cranbrook, Kent, 26 September, 1620.
II. Joseph Merriam, of Concord, died 1 January, 1641, leaving wife Sarah and children:

III. George Merriam, of Concord, died 29 December, 1675, and Susan his wife 8 October before. They had these children, all except the first, mentioned in his will of 8 October, 1675.

IV. Joseph Merriam was born about 1630; married, 12 July, 1653, Sarah, daughter of Gregory Stone, of Cambridge, and had:
Sarah,3 Lydia,3 Joseph,3 Robert.3
He is called of Cambridge, in the Middlesex Records, but is buried at Concord. He died 20 April, 1677.
V. John Merriam, m. 1663, Mary, daughter of John Cooper, of Cambridge, and had:
John,3 Nathaniel,3 Joseph,3 Samuel,3 and daughters.
He was of Concord, and died 27 February, 1725, and his widow 5 March, 1731.
Cousin Isaac Day in Old England, to whom Robert Merriam left land in Cambridge, provided he should come over and take possession of it before Mrs. Merriam’s death, seems to have done so, and to have lived at Cambridge, 1686-92, according to Savage, who calls him a “London citizen embroiderer.” I presume his mother was a Merriam.
John, Nathaniel, Mary, and Joanna Chittenden, were children of William, whose wife was Joan Sheaf, sister of Mrs. Mary Merriam; they lived at Guilford, Conn.
Cousin Elizabeth Corwin was wife of Jonathan, of Salem.
Cousins John and Samuel Ruck were, I suppose, of Salem; their mother seems to have been a sister of Mrs. Mary Merriam, and therefore a Sheaf.
Cousin Jonathan Hubbard was son of John, of Wethersfield and Hadley, and grandson of George, of Guilford. The mother of Jonathan was probably by birth a Merriam, or a Sheaf.
All these connections do not enable us to say, with certainty, whence in England came the brothers Merriam. If we could know that Robert was married before coming to New England, their ancestors would be found at Cranbrook or some place near it. If Isaac Day was a native of London, that city might prove to have been also the home of the Merriams. The facts are not such as to give a preference to either of these conjectures.
The Axtell Family in America: First Five Generations

The earliest appearance of the name Axtell which has come to my knowledge dates back to the year 1535. In that year the “bon homes” of a monastery of the Augustinian order in Gatesden, Hertfordshire, England, made over their property to Henry the Eighth, and among the names signed to the deed was that of John Axstyl. The registration of baptisms and deaths in the parish churches of England began about 1538. At St. Peter’s Church, Berkhampstead, a town in Hertfordshire, there is the record of the baptism of John Axtell, son of John, in 1539, and of William, son of John, in 1541. Five other entries of Axtells appear before 1614. From 1614 to 1628 there is a series of entries, as follows:

It appears from the above that there were two William Axtells rearing families in Berkhampstead between 1614 and 1628. One, perhaps, was the William who was a burgess in 1628 and common clerk in 1639.
If we assign the first four in the above list, with Samuel, born 1624, and one of the daughters to one William and the rest to the other, we avoid difficulties which any other division encounters, and make Thomas (born 1619) the emigrant to America, brother of Daniel (born 1622) the colonel under Cromwell, who was put to death in 1660 for his share in the death of Charles I.
Mary, daughter of Thomas, was baptized in Berkhampstead, September 25, 1639, and Henry, the second child, October 15, 1641. Soon after the latter date, the little family appear in Sudbury, Mass. Here, June 1, 1644, another Mary was born. Thomas, the father, died in 1646, and was buried August 1st of that year.
“The inventory of the goods of Thomas Axtell of Sudbury, lately deceased. Inprimis, his land and house £8, 10, cattle £8, 10, wearing apparell and bedding with his armes £10, for Brasse and pewter £5. He expressed that Mary his wife should have all his estate to bring up his children.”
The widow married John Goodnow, September 19, 1656.
June 18, 1659, Edward Wright and Hannah Axtell of Sudbury were married. If the above identification of Thomas, born 1619, with Thomas of Sudbury be correct, this Hannah cannot have been his daughter. Who she was does not appear.

SECOND GENERATION.
2. HENRY2 AXTELL (Thomas1), born in England, 1641, took up land with the first proprietors of Marlboro’, Mass., in 1660. He married Hannah Merriam, June 14, 1665, and lived in the eastern part of Marlboro’.

Henry Axtell was killed by the Indians early in 1676. The inventory of his estate is dated April 1 of that year. His widow married Will Taylor, July 5, 1677.
THIRD GENERATION.
3. THOMAS3 AXTELL (Henry,2 Thomas1), married November 2, 1697, Sarah Barker of Concord, and lived in the east part of Marlboro’. About 1735, he moved to Hassanamisco, afterwards Grafton. He died December 18, 1750. His wife died June 26, 1747.

4. DANIEL3 AXTELL (Henry,2 Thomas1), born November 4, 1673; died January, 1735. In 1695 Elder William Pratt organized a church in Dorchester, Mass., and soon after went to South Carolina to plant his church there as a missionary colony. In his diary, he records a very hospitable reception by Lady Axtell, the widow of Landgrave Daniel Axtell, who went from England to South Carolina about 1680. Probably Daniel Axtell of Massachusetts accompanied Mr. Pratt on one of his earlier voyages to South Carolina. May 12, 1702, he married Thankful, daughter of Elder Pratt, and lived in South Carolina till about 1707, when he returned to Massachusetts and became a large landholder in Berkley, then a part of Dighton and Taunton. A release, dated March 16, 1703, from Daniel Axtell of Carolina, county of Bartley, on Ashley river, made out in favor of his brother Thomas of Massachusetts, establishes the relationship. A clause in Lady Axtell’s will leaving property to her “kinsman Daniel Axtell in New England” shows a relationship there. But the landgrave could not have been the son of the regicide, since the landgrave had a daughter of age in 1678, as appears from his will made that year in England.

6. THOMAS4 AXTELL (Thomas,3 Henry,2 Thomas1), removed from Marlboro’ to Grafton. May 13, 1736, he married Elizabeth Sherman of Marlboro’, who received as her marriage portion a large tract of land in the north part of Grafton, a part of which remains in the hands of her descendant Axtells. October 6, 1760, Thomas, now a widower, married Mary Sanger, by whom he had several children, all of whom died young. Thomas died 1798.

7. DANIEL4 AXTELL (Daniel,3 Henry,2 Thomas1), married September 15, 1737, Waitstill Babbitt. He lived in Berkley, and was prominent in town and church affairs. First wife died 1757; second wife, Phebe Reed.
Daniel died September 21, 1761. His widow married Capt. James Foster of Rochester. Children:

Thankful married Elisha Crane, 1774. Among her descendants is J.E. Crane of Taunton, who still preserves the memorandum book of his ancestor Daniel Axtell.4
8. WILLIAM4 AXTELL (Daniel,3 Henry,2 Thomas1), married Hannah Spooner of Middleboro’, November 2, 1739. Removed from Berkley about 1743, probably into Taunton.
Children of William and Hannah:

Joanna married Bernice Crane of Berkley, January 15, 1763. She lived to be one hundred years old, dying in 1846. Her grandson, Rev. Silas Axtell Crane, D.D., was an Episcopalian clergyman greatly honored and loved. He died at East Greenwich, R. I., in 1872.
9. HENRY4* AXTELL (Daniel,3 Henry,2 Thomas1), married Jemima Leonard, 1737. He removed about 1740 or ’41, with the Leonards to Mendham, N. J., where he died 1753 or ’54. His widow married Matthew Lumm. Children:

11. EBENEZER4 AXTELL (Daniel,3 Henry,2 Thomas1). Berkley records say, “Ebenezer Axtell late of Mendom in Jarzes but now an inhabitant of Berkley and Hannah Hatheway of Berkley were married Oct. 15, 1751.” He is mentioned frequently as filling town offices. Children:

12. THOMAS4 AXTELL (Daniel,3 Henry,2 Thomas1). There is no record of Thomas in Berkley, though the “Axtell Memorial” says he moved in 1769 or ’70 from Massachusetts to New Jersey with his two sons.
My informants say he married Hannah Goebel (a New England name, found in the Concord records) in 1746, and died in 1758. His widow married Nathan Lincoln. He probably followed Henry to New Jersey before 1750. Children:

*The list of children here given accords with that in “The Axtell Memorial.” Between Bethany, b. 1744, and Calvin, b. 1750, there is room for two children. He claimed relationship with this family.

13. DANIEL5 AXTELL (Joseph,4 Thomas,3 Henry,2 Thomas1), lived in Grafton, Mass., where November 12, 1754, he married Elizabeth Whittemore. After the Revolution, he went to Grafton, Vt., where he died September 1, 1799. His widow died March 20, 1812.

16. HENRY5 AXTELL (William,4 Daniel,3 Henry,2 Thomas1). Henry Axell (sic) was a seaman from Massachusetts, engaged July 10, 1776, for five months. Henry Axtell of Berkley, in 1777, enlisted for three years in Zebedee Ripley’s co., Col. G. Bradford. Also mentioned as in the Continental army, 1780, 1782. This agrees with a tradition among his descendants, as follows: “A soldier of the Revolution, a sergeant in Washington’s Life Guard, at the battle of Stony Point, later with Wayne in the Indian War. A prisoner on ship Jersey, escaping by filing off his chain with a nail; lost at sea.” The identification here made seems very probable.

23. EBENEZER5 AXTELL (Samuel,4 Daniel,3 Henry,2 Thomas1). Beyond the entry of his birth Berkley records are silent concerning him. Ebenezer Axtell, of Berkley, served six months in Rhode Island, 1778, and is mentioned as Ebenezer Axtall in Rhode Island records. There was also an Ebenezer, ensign in Morris Co. militia, N.J. See note to Henry, 9.
24. EZRA5 AXTELL (Samuel,4 Daniel,3 Henry,2 Thomas1), was a soldier in the Revolution; settled in Pittsford, Vt.; removed to Pierpont, St. Lawrence Co., N.Y., about 1816, where he died July, 1831.

25. SAMUEL5 AXTELL (Samuel,4 Daniel,3 Henry,2 Thomas1), was a soldier of the Revolution, after which he went to Chester, Vt., and settled in what was then a wilderness. About 1785, married Celia Dean of Taunton, Mass. She died December 5, 1806. His second wife was Martha Earle, who died 1859.
Samuel died July 5, 1835.
